Best calendar style for home printing

Home printers have opinions. They smudge heavy fills, fade thin gray text and clip anything shoved to the paper's edge. The designs that print well at home share three traits: light ink use, strong contrast and honest margins.

An ink-friendly calendar design printed in black and white

What prints well at home

  • Low ink. Pick designs with thin rules and little solid fill — the Ink Saver set (Ink Friendly, Ink Saver Open Frame) is drawn for exactly this. Dark month-wide fills drink cartridges and smear on inkjets.
  • Bold, legible labels. Month titles and weekday labels should be readable from across the room. The Classic set is the reference for this; Classic Large Print goes further for low vision.
  • Real writing space. If you write on the calendar, keep day cells big and empty. Large Writing Space and Planner Soft Grid keep their cells open instead of decorating them.

How to choose in 30 seconds

  1. Open the Templates tab and preview two or three designs by hovering.
  2. Imagine the page in black and white: would the colors turn to mush? If yes, pick a design that already works in gray.
  3. Print one page. If it looks good, you are done — the same design will behave the same way every month.

Tips

  • Light colored text and borders read as gray on a mono printer. If that is the look you want, fine; if not, pick stronger colors.
  • Pair a low-ink design with Show week numbers or a notes area to add usefulness without adding ink.
